Lest Water Cease to Flow
This artwork imagines our cities in a future that fails to heed the warnings of climate change and weather extremes. Decreasing rainfall leading to long periods of drought, coupled with extensive land clearing for crops and increased water use for irrigation, challenge the sustainability of our way of life. If this trend continues, it has the potential to create ‘ghost cities’ from lack of adequate water supply and increased salinity, as depicted in this work. In creating my artworks, I try to use sustainable art practices. I include only materials that I find discarded on streets or washed up on beaches, in the form in which I find them. This work incorporates a rusted barbecue lid, a flat sheet of metal with scratches and white stains, pieces of rusted metal, a crushed bottle lid, and variously sized rusted rods and bolts, mounted on a thin, water-stained board.
